Nathan and I never anticipated that when we got married in 2019, we’d be picking up and moving to Texas, of all places, with a couple of additions to our family, a mere 2 years later.

Texas wasn’t exactly on the list of ideal destinations to which we’d think about moving for a number of reasons; primarily, I suppose, because it’s where my parents live, where I grew up, and I felt a hell of a lot more comfortable having a stateline between us. However, it is a pretty big state. With a coastline!

What’s more, it’s NOT Oklahoma.

South Texas Here We Come

When Nathan got an amazing job opportunity that would have us relocate to Texas, it wasn’t that hard of a decision to make. He’d still get to work remotely, we just needed to live in the state, preferably close to Austin. His brother lives in Bastrop with his wife and 3 young girls, so we started looking there and broadened our scope based on school districts.

It didn’t take long for us to fall in love with the idea of moving to New Braunfels. No shortage of things to do, family-friendly attractions, a reasonable distance away from both San Antonio and Austin that made their attractions still accessible…and a truly amazing academic opportunity for our oldest to attend Memorial Early College High School (MECHS).

Long story short, things miraculously fell into place for us to move here, and we couldn’t have been more excited to move somewhere that we felt we were really, for the first time in our lives, choosing to call home.

Plenty of Options

It won’t be long before we hit our 2nd year living here, and Nathan and I often comment something to the effect that it feels like we live in a Norman Rockwell painting. We’re friends with our neighbors! Kids play together in the neighborhood and ride their bikes in little kiddie cliques up and down the street.

At least once a month, there’s another neighborhood party or get together. For an introvert, with as much social anxiety as I have, these people have still grown to feel like family to me. I’ve never lived somewhere with so much warmth and community love as our neighborhood has. And that’s just on our street!

Of course, we don’t feel like this is meant to be our “forever home”; however, we often talk about that if, for some tragic reason, our dreams to live on a sailboat were dashed, that we got stuck here, it really wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.

This is a wonderful city in which to raise a family, and we’re so grateful for the time that we do live here. Especially with all of the fun things to do in New Braunfels.
